What Are the Seven Deadly Sins?
The seven deadly sins, also known as the capital vices or cardinal sins, are a grouping and classification of vices within Christian teachings. They are called "capital" because they engender other sins and other vices. They were first enumerated by Pope Gregory I (the Great) in the 6th century and later refined by St. Thomas Aquinas.
While these sins are not explicitly listed together in the Bible, they represent behaviors and dispositions that are contrary to the Christian virtues and separate us from God's grace. Each deadly sin has a corresponding virtue that helps us overcome its temptation.

Pride
Excessive belief in one's own abilities that interferes with recognition of God's grace.
Greed
The desire for material wealth or gain, ignoring the realm of the spiritual.
Lust
An intense or uncontrolled desire, particularly of a sexual nature.
Envy
The desire for others' traits, status, abilities, or situation.
Gluttony
Overindulgence and overconsumption to the point of waste.
Wrath
Uncontrolled feelings of anger, rage, and hatred.
Sloth
Failure to act and utilize one's talents; spiritual apathy.
Overcome Sin Through Grace

Through the Sacrament of Reconciliation, regular prayer, and the practice of virtue, we can overcome these vices and grow in holiness.
