    Envy

    Invidia

The desire for others' traits, status, abilities, or situation.

    Understanding Envy

Envy is sadness at the good fortune of others and the desire to possess what belongs to them. Unlike jealousy which fears losing what one has, envy resents that others have what we lack. It poisons the soul and destroys charity.

    Effects on the Soul

    • Robs us of joy and contentment
    • Breeds resentment and bitterness
    • Leads to gossip and detraction
    • Destroys friendships and community
    • Can escalate to hatred and harmful actions

    What Scripture Says

"A tranquil heart gives life to the flesh, but envy makes the bones rot."

    Proverbs 14:30

"Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast."

    1 Corinthians 13:4

"For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every vile practice."

    James 3:16

    The Virtue of Kindness

Kindness, also called charity or brotherly love, rejoices in the good fortune of others. It sees others as brothers and sisters rather than competitors, and actively seeks their welfare and happiness.

    Practical Steps to Cultivate Kindness:

    • 1.Practice gratitude daily for your own blessings
    • 2.Genuinely compliment others on their achievements
    • 3.Pray for those you are tempted to envy
    • 4.Celebrate the successes of family and friends
    • 5.Focus on your unique gifts and calling from God

A Prayer for Deliverance from Envy

Loving Father, free my heart from envy and fill it with genuine love for my brothers and sisters. Help me to rejoice in their blessings and to be grateful for the unique gifts You have given me. Amen.
