What is Visio Divina?
Visio Divina, meaning "sacred seeing" or "divine seeing" in Latin, is an ancient form of Christian contemplative prayer that uses images—icons, religious art, nature, or sacred imagery—as a gateway to encounter God.
Just as Lectio Divina ("divine reading") invites us to pray with Scripture, Visio Divina invites us to pray with our eyes. The practice acknowledges that God speaks to us not only through words but also through visual beauty, symbol, and sacred art.
This practice is especially meaningful for World Youth Day pilgrims, as you will encounter countless sacred images, churches, and artistic expressions of faith throughout your journey. Visio Divina transforms sightseeing into a profound spiritual encounter.
The Five Movements
Even with the steps outlined below, it can be daunting to begin a new prayer practice. Start by finding a piece of sacred art that intrigues or even inspires you to pray with on your own. Search the internet for sacred images or visit a local church that has sacred art on display or choose one of the Stations of the Cross. Follow these five movements to pray with sacred images.
Visio
Looking at the image. Take time to gaze upon the sacred image slowly and attentively. Let your eyes wander across every detail—colors, shapes, light, shadows, expressions, and gestures.
Meditatio
Being attentive to God's Word. What draws your attention? What emotions arise within you? Let the image speak to your heart and connect with Scripture.
Oratio
Praying from the heart. Speak to God about what you have seen and felt. Express gratitude, ask questions, share your struggles. Let the image become a prayer.
Contemplatio
Resting in God's presence. Release all thoughts and simply be with God. Allow yourself to rest in the divine presence that the image has opened for you.
Actio
Asking God how to live out this prayer. How is God calling you to respond? What concrete action or change of heart is the Spirit inviting you to embrace?

Use these images to practice Visio Divina. Spend at least 10-15 minutes with each image.
The Good Shepherd
"I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep." — John 10:11
For Reflection: Notice how Christ holds the lamb. Where do you see yourself in this image? Are you the lamb being carried, or perhaps one still wandering?
The Prodigal Son
"And he arose and came to his father. But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and felt compassion and ran and embraced him and kissed him." — Luke 15:20
For Reflection: Gaze upon the father embracing his son. What regret do you carry? How does this gesture speak to your own desperation, to wanting no recrimination or judgement for past events? God is waiting for you in this way, each day looking to see if you are approaching so he can take you in his arms and tell you how much He loves you.
The Annunciation
"Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word." — Luke 1:38
For Reflection: Notice Mary's posture and the angel's gesture. What is God announcing in your life right now? How are you being called to say 'yes'?
The Last Supper
"This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me." — Luke 22:19
For Reflection: Look at the faces around the table. Where would you be seated? What conversation might you have with the Lord at this moment?
L'Innocence
"Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!" — John 1:29
For Reflection: Mary holds both the Christ Child and a lamb—symbols of innocence and sacrifice intertwined. How does this tender moment speak to the mystery of love and surrender? Where do you see innocence in your own life that calls for protection?
A Prayer for Sacred Seeing
Lord, open the eyes of my heart,
that I may see You in all things.
Grant me the grace of sacred sight,
to perceive Your presence in beauty,
Your love in faces,
Your glory in creation.
Through sacred images and holy art,
draw me deeper into Your mystery.
Let what I see transform how I live,
and may my gaze always return to You.
